Locomotive Geek

Railroad history, told from the record.

Locomotive Geek publishes documentary videos about the history of the railroads: the locomotives, the people who ran them, and the decisions that shaped them. Every video is researched from primary sources and archive photographs before a word of it is narrated.

You can watch the channel at https://www.youtube.com/@LocomotiveGeek.

About this site

This site exists for one reason: Locomotive Geek uses a small private tool to publish its own videos to its own YouTube channel, and the YouTube Data API requires that the tool have a homepage, a privacy policy and terms of service.

What the publishing tool does

The tool is used only by Locomotive Geek, on Locomotive Geek's own YouTube channel. It is not a product, it is not offered to anyone else, and there are no other users. It does four things:

  1. Uploads a finished video file to the Locomotive Geek channel as private, with a scheduled publish time.

  2. Sets that video's title, description, tags and thumbnail.

  3. Reads the channel's own uploads, so it can pick a publishing slot that does not clash with a video already scheduled.

  4. Reads comments left on Locomotive Geek videos and posts replies to them.

Every upload is set to private with a future publish time so it can be reviewed before anyone sees it. The tool has no ability to make a video public.

What it does not do

  • It does not read, collect or store information about viewers or subscribers beyond the public comments left on Locomotive Geek's own videos.

  • It does not access any other YouTube channel or account.

  • It does not serve advertising, and it does not allow any third party to serve content through it.

  • It has no accounts, no sign up, and no way for anyone else to use it.
